Progress Over Perfection

Last updated on February 11, 2021

Entering into a new year can always make us retrospective on all the accomplishments we have or have not done. We set resolutions, too often unrealistic, and there is a lot of pressure in the early months of the year to do and be everything right in that very instant. What seems to get forgotten, is that dreams do not happen overnight, and progress, even if slow, is still progress. Instead of looking at the previous days or years with regret, every morning if you can make the conscious effort to make progress in even the most minor or intangible of ways… You are being successful. This year, that is all the resolution I set. To embrace progress and growth, no matter how slow they happen.

With that being said, I am a huge planner. I set large big goals, plan out everything I possibly can, and in many ways that is my Achille’s heel. For years I have let myself become disappointed when plans did not work out exactly as I hoped, because well… Life doesn’t always have those same plans in mind. So, I have begun to try to focus on and gradually master the art of letting things go. Some days, it goes well. Other days, not so much. However, I feel myself growing each day. I take a deep breath, choose to find happiness in what is, and move forward. The sun thankfully always comes up each morning, willing to give us all a fresh start.

As a writer, I have many goals that I am working hard to meet this year. Currently, I am deep into the process of editing and writing the second draft of two different novels I have completed. By March, I hope to be giving at least one of them to my husband to read as my first ever reader. Soon after, I want to be working with an editor on whichever of the two I feel is most ready to take the next steps towards publishing. After that, things get a little blurry, but my main goal of the year is to get a book published. I have yet to decide if I want to take the indie or traditional publishing route, although lately I feel that for my current novels independent, self-publishing might work best.

Aside from my two novels, which are both in the Young Adult genre, I have been trying to write a children’s book every few months. One that I am particularly proud of is in the querying process, submitted currently to a large handful of publishers. Every day I check my phone and email with a glimmer of hope that I will hear something positive back, and every day so far there has been naught. I am learning more each and every day that becoming an author is quite the tedious, long, difficult process. Of course, it has always been my dream, so I’m okay with it.

My website is fairly new, though this is not my first time blogging or writing articles for the internet. For the past couple of years, I have been a freelance writer for the travel and family niche, and at different points have had my own websites that were purely blogs. First and foremost, breannapetsch.com is the building of my author platform. However, I do plan on writing blog posts as often as I can. That may be once a week, or, in busy seasons when I have a lot to work on, it may become once a quarter. I hope to quickly find what works best and make a consistent posting schedule, but in the meantime, please bear with me as I begin this trying journey.

If you have made it this far, you should know a few things about me. I am married to my basically high school sweetheart (long, beautiful story I will have to share in detail later!) and we have a little boy who is almost two and half! Tea is my weakness, and on a typical day I drink anywhere from two to six cups of it. Sometimes, I’ll drink coffee instead, but if I do that it usually ends up being cream with a little kick added in it. Ha! I have Disney coursing through my veins, so much so that I consider watching the movies, wearing fashion inspired by the characters, and frequenting the parks to be a lifestyle. Since I no longer live in southern California this is a bit more difficult, so I have to get creative with my lifestyle blog myhouseofmouse.com. I also love the outdoors and leisurely hiking. Nature is so magical and inspiring to me, it can’t be helped!

Do you have any questions for me, or things you would like to know? What are your goals or resolutions for 2020?

I am happy you are here to follow me along on this journey!
